Which 1Zpresso grinders are still in production or discontinued?

1Zpresso have produced a surprisingly large number of models since 2016, and most of them are now discontinued. 33 coffee grinders over that period is a huge turnover of products, which could be explained by advancements in manufacturing capabilities or some marketing strategy – either way it makes it very confusing for customers to know which ones are still being produced, or if their own grinder is still supported.

You can still buy discontinued models on third party stores and second hand markets, but sourcing parts for replacements may be difficult later on. We recommend acquiring newer models for this reason.

Availability/production status of each grinder is displayed on the chart.

1Zpresso model names explained

1Zpresso's naming convention can be very confusing, so we made a list of what the letters and words mean. Note that the features of the grinders with these labels are not limited to what is listed below, but always contains those features (with the exception of KS and JS, which is explained in the next chapter).

S: (e.g. Q2 S)Foldable handle
Pro: (e.g. K-Pro) External/Top adjustment mechanism
Max: (e.g. J-Max) Larger grounds capacity + Magnetic catch cup
Plus: (e.g. JE-Plus) Larger grounds capacity + Magnetic catch cup + Blind shaker
Ultra: (e.g. X-Ultra) Foldable handle + Magnetic catch cup + External adjustment mechanism

No suffix: (e.g. JX) Screw based catch cup + Internal adjustment mechanism
(Except for the E model which has a top adjustment mechanism).

So the JE-Plus S for example, has a larger grounds capacity, magnetic catch cup, blind shaker, and foldable handle.

Which 1Zpresso models have a foldable handle?

Any model names containing S or Ultra have a foldable handle, with the exception of KS and JS. The S in KS and JS predates the release of the foldable handle so stood for something else (maybe small? Who knows).

Confusingly, the J or J Manual is often sold with a foldable handle but does not contain the categorisation S or Ultra.

Why 1Zpresso adjustment claims are wrong

For every grinder model, 1Zpresso provides a grind size graph for their customers, which are also viewable online. They also provide the micron per click adjustment values which we put in the table. These graphs and values differ greatly to our own grind size charts, which is often pointed out to us by thoughtful readers!

We wrote this article explaining where 1Zpresso's claims for micron adjustments per click came from, and how they are unhelpful and misleading.

A abstract 2D drawing of a conical burr set, with circles of light blue and dark blue gradient in dotting the background.

Why conical burr 'microns per step' are always wrong

Read why 1Zpresso adjustment claims are wrong here.

Don't let this affect picking a grinder though! Pretty much every conical burr grinder manufacturer does the same thing. Comparatively and proportionally, the values are still correct – if the microns-per-click are lower than another grinder's, then it will definitely grind finer.

Best 1Zpresso grinders for espresso

Probably the most well engineered and precise grinder 1Zpresso offers, the J-Ultra rivals the spot for the best manual espresso grinder in the world.

1Zpresso's main espresso grinder

1Zpresso J-Ultra

This espresso oriented grinder has the most adjustment levels of any other 1Zpresso model, as well as having the smallest micron adjustments at 8 microns vertical movement.

Pros

  • 500 settings
  • 8 micron adjustment
  • Can grind for coarser methods

Cons

  • Expensive

Hybrid models:

If you don't exclusively brew for espresso, then consider the K-Ultra and X-ultra. Read further on to view specific details about these grinders and brewing for both espresso and pour over.

Best 1Zpresso grinders for pour over

Although the K-Ultra is a hybrid grinder, it's probably one of the best pour over options available from 1Zpresso.

With a burr set specifically designed to brew for both espresso and pour over, this model can grind consistently and uniformly.

More affordable model

1Zpresso J

  • More affordable

Cons

  • Internal adjustment
  • Big micron adjustment

Best 1Zpresso grinders for both pour over and espresso

Generally speaking, it's very hard to design a coffee grinder that can produce grounds that are suitable for both espresso and pour over. But if you had to choose the best all-round hand grinder available on the market, then the K-Ultra could top the list.

The best all-rounder

1Zpresso K-Ultra

With a burr set specifically designed to brew for both espresso and pour over, this model can grind consistently and uniformly.

Pros

  • Great burr set
  • Wide grind size range

Cons

  • Only 100 settings
  • Expensive

Although the X-Ultra has more settings than the K-Ultra, the burr sets are lower quality. More fines make it into the cup, but if you like coffee with stronger body this may still be a good option for you.

More adjustment settings

1Zpresso X-Ultra

Pros

  • 240 grind settings
  • More affordable

Cons

  • Lower quality burrs

Best 1Zpresso grinders for moka pot

Any of the grinders that are espresso or hybrid oriented will be perfectly suitable for moka pot. Check the espresso and hybrid grinder section of this article.

Best 1Zpresso grinders for AeroPress

The ZP6 Special is one of the best uniform grinders (can create very clean grind profile). This makes it very suitable for both normal and inverted methods, as well as being an excellent pour over grinder.

Uniform grind profile

1Zpresso ZP6 S Special

1Zpresso's answer to light roasted pour over and AeroPress with clarity. Not for those who prefer more complex brews with strong body.

Pros

  • Very clean pour over
  • Suitable for other coarse brew methods

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Not suitable for espresso

But if you like richer and grittier AeroPress brews, consider getting any of the models recommended for espresso at the start of the article.

Which 1Zpresso models fit inside an AeroPress?

The only models that can fit in an AeroPress are the Q models. These grinders are the cheapest product 1Zpresso offers, as well as being the lightest and most compact. These are a great option if you're always on the go, but it does come with a substantial trade-off in quality.

Best 1Zpresso grinders for french press or cold brew

If you're looking to grind coarser than pour over, then the Q series or J Manual grinder are probably the best options.

More affordable model

1Zpresso J

Although cheaper, the internal adjustment and larger micron adjustment makes dialling-in harder and more time consuming.

Pros

  • More affordable

Cons

  • Internal adjustment
  • Big micron adjustment

If you're looking for something more high-end then the K-Ultra is also a good choice, but it's definitely an overkill purchase if you're not going to use it for finer grinds.

1Zpresso replacement burrs

1Zpresso use at least 9 different burrs across all 33 of their hand grinders. These are listed in the graph at the start of this article.

How to pronounce 1Zpresso

According to 1Zpresso, the name is the combination of '1Z' and 'espresso'. The '1' supposedly represents their goal of being the best coffee grinder manufacturer.

The number '1' is pronounced 'ee' in mandarin, so combined with 'Z' (zee) you get the proper pronounciation of 1Zpresso: Easy-presso (ee-zee-presso).

So it's NOT 🇬🇧 one-zed-presso, 🇺🇸 one-zee-presso, 🇪🇸 uno-seta-presso or 🇯🇵 ichi-zeddo-puresso.

Where are 1Zpresso based?

1Zpresso is a coffee grinder manufacturer based in Taiwan. They rose to prominence after they entered the high-end coffee grinder market in 2016 with far more affordable hand-grinders than their competitors like Comandante.

The actual name of the company/manufacturer of 1Zpresso grinders is Aikang (愛康).
