This is Blue Bottle Coffee's basic brew recipe for the inverted AeroPress method. It creates one regular strong cup of coffee, which can be adapted to suit your preferred strength.
Founded in Oakland in the early 2000s by James Freeman, Blue Bottle Coffee began as a tiny roaster, which quickly became a cornerstone of the third wave coffee movement. Blue Bottle Cafés now operate in many major cities around the world, including New York, Tokyo, and Seoul.
Notes
- If plunging ends too early, grind finer, if it takes too long, grind coarser.
- Add a couple grams of coffee if you prefer your coffee stronger, a couple grams less if you prefer a lighter drink.
Recipe Preparation
- Coffee
- 15g
- Medium Fine grind
- Light roast
- Water
- 200g
- 93°C / 199°F
- Equipment
- AeroPress
- AeroPress Micro-Filters
- AeroPress Coffee Stirrer
- Scales
- Kettle
- Place your AeroPress in the inverted position on your scales, without the cap.
- Place a paper filter in the cap and put aside.
- Add your coffee into the chamber and tare your scales.
- Once your water is ready, start the timer.
Steps
1. Pour

30gof hot water.2. Stir
Stir the coffee with the stirrer 3-4 times. Make sure all the coffee is saturated.
3. Wait
Let the coffee bloom.

170gof water (200gtotal).5. Wait
While you wait, rinse the paper filter inside the cap with hot water.
6. Lock the Filter Cap
Place the cap with the filter inside.
7. Remove Brewer from Scales
Gently remove the brewer from the scales.
8. Push air out
In the inverted position, gently push enough for the air to come out, but not enough for the coffee.
9. Flip AeroPress
Flip the AeroPress onto your drinking vessel.
10. Press Plunger
Push down gently on the plunger using the natural weight of your hands and arms without force. This should take around
30 seconds. If it ends too early, grind finer, if it takes too long, grind coarser.
